Cannabis Construction Projects using CGMPs as a foundation while awaiting Federal Law Reform

As the cannabis industry continues to evolve at the state level, those within the industry are wisely keeping an eye on possible developments at the federal level and planning accordingly. Specifically, many are gaining a better understanding of and planning for Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) as outlined by the FDA. By addressing potential cGMP hurdles now — relative to food safety, consumer safety, and advanced manufacturing standards — projects in development can design for adherence to operational requirements for pharmaceutical validation.

One such cannabis construction project is Root & Bloom, opening in Salisbury, Massachusetts during the fall of 2021. Designed by Anderson Porter Design and being built by Key Construction Solutions, Root & Bloom will enter the cannabis market as adult-use cultivation and product manufacturing company. With their focus on creating high-quality products while prioritizing sustainability, innovation, and giving back to the local community, Root & Bloom is poised to make a solid impression.

This purpose-built 40,000+ square foot facility will use the leading technology in the cultivation and extraction processes, resulting in premium products and sustainable practices. Working with Anderson Porter Design’s award-winning architectural team and relying on Key’s stellar cannabis construction experience, Root & Bloom will be one of the most innovative and efficient cannabis cultivation and manufacturing facilities in the state.

Root & Bloom Project Features

  • Designed to meet current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) standards as set forth by the FDA
  • State-of-the-art cultivation facility and cannabis processing
  • Purpose-built food product manufacturing space
  • Employment for 35-40 local employees
  • Complete redevelopment of the site with a newly-built facility and grounds

In the final stages of engineering and design, this facility will create a low-risk and highly-repeatable cultivation and manufacturing process, enabling the operation to be efficient and highly profitable while consistently producing a high-quality product.

“Root & Bloom has invested in the best minds and most innovative firms to build our company into Massachusetts’ premier grower, manufacturer, and distributor of craft cannabis and cannabis products,“ said George Haseltine, co-founder of Root & Bloom. “We are excited to partner with Key to build our 40,000 square foot facility, featuring the latest innovations in technology — from seed to sale. With Key’s experience in the cannabis field, coupled with their reputation for excellence, we are looking forward to a project that will set the standards for quality, sustainability, and efficiency in the market.”

Industry insiders place Massachusetts’ projected cannabis industry estimates at $2 billion by 2023. That amount accounts for only the recreational aspect of the cannabis market, so expanding the marketplace to include pharmaceutical offerings would make a significant impact. And Root & Bloom will be ready for those changes, if and when they arrive.
